  6.                    Introducing HP SNAplus
  7.  
  8. Hewlett-Packard first introduced IBM connectivity products
  9. in the late 1970's.  As IBM networking standards evolve, HP
  10. continues to add new capabilities to provide co-existence of
  11. HP systems in IBM environments.  The SNAplus project allows
  12. HP to continue offering one of the most comprehensive IBM
  13. connectivity offering in the industry.

  15. Customers today, are evaluating alternatives to mainframes
  16. which provide significantly better price/performance, lower
  17. support costs and scalable growth.  This trend has meant a
  18. shift in the networking solutions.  In many cases new system
  19. must be tightly integrated with the mainframe environment,
  20. since users still need access to applications remaining on
  21. the host system.  SNAplus offers a range of new capabilities
  22. and products to meet the growing needs of this rightsizing
  23. trend.

  27. HP SNAplus provides the following key components:
  28.  
  29.      o  Client/Server Architecture - The client/server
  30.         architecture connects distributed users with
  31.         applications that are on multiple systems on a LAN.
  32.         Multiple servers provide the additional benefit of
  33.         redundancy, as well as load balancing.
  34.  
  35.      o  Applications and APIs - Application Programming
  36.         Interfaces (APIs) are provided for developing
  37.         distributed applications, programs to interact with
  38.         existing host applications and general services for
  39.         application programs.
  40.  
  41.      o  Interactive and Batch - Interactive and batch
  42.         communications are provided for terminal and printer
  43.         emulation and batch data transfers providing a key
  44.         IBM operating environment for mission critical
  45.         applications.

  47.      o  Network Management, Support and Consulting Services
  48.         - Centralized network management capabilities
  49.         provide for configuring, managing and
  50.         troubleshooting the network.  In addition to
  51.         OpenView connectivity, communication with NetView is
  52.         provided through data-link alerts, response time
  53.         alerts, and user application alerts.  HP also
  54.         provides worldwide support and consulting services
  55.         for designing, implementing, and maintaining the
  56.         network.

  61. HP SNAplus provides the following customer benefits:

  63.      o  Increased performance - Client/server architecture
  64.         improves performance of clients by offloading the
  65.         communications protocols from the client to the
  66.         server machines.  In addition, load balancing across
  67.         multiple servers can provide increased performance
  68.         in environments where host access traffic is heavy.

  70.      o  Investment protection - The HP SNAplus product line
  71.         provides for future growth and allows more efficient
  72.         development of new capabilities and functionality.
  73.         SNAplus offers a smooth migration path providing
  74.         existing HP to IBM users a clean way to update to
  75.         the new generation of products.

  77.      o  Improved service and decision making - Standards-
  78.         based products, such as HLLAPI and Motif, provide
  79.         for efficient development of customized software to
  80.         fit the business requirement.

  82.      o  Seamless integration of HP systems into an IBM

  86.         improved productivity and reduced operations.

  90.            configuration are network administration and

  95.            LUA API's combined with a Motif interface allow
  96.            customers quickly and efficiently to develop and

  100.            User Interface (GUI) and Token Ring will improve
  101.            productivity through network speed and easy to
  102.            use interface.

  104. Release 1, has been available since April 1992 for the HP
  105. 9000 Series 300, 400, 700, and 800.  This release included
  106. three products:  HP-UX SNAplusLink, HP-UX SNAplus3270, HP-UX
  107. SNAplusAPI.
  108.  
  109. Release 2, available March 1 1993, will include SNA over
  110. Token Ring, SNA over X.25 (or QLLC) support, NetView API,
  111. LUA API, RJE, Motif Graphical User Interface for color 3270
  112. and 3179G Graphics support.
  113.  
  114. Release 3 of the HP SNAplus product family will include
  115. support for CPI-C, 16 bit character support for Asian
  116. languages and HP server support for PC clients.  Watch for
  117. availability in late 1993.
  118.  
  119. Remaining phases of SNAplus being investigated include APPN
  120. End Node support and the integration of the HP 3000 Series
  121. 900 Business Systems which offer extensive SNA capabilities
  122. today.

  124. HP-UX SNAplusLink for HP 9000 Series 700 and 800
  125.  
  126. Release 1 of SNAplusLink provides the data link control
  127. layer for SNA secondary communications across SDLC
  128. communication links to host or peer systems.  SNAplusLink
  129. bundles the link and client/server in one product.  The link
  130. and client/server are available on the HP 9000 Series 700
  131. workstations in addition to the Series 800 multi-user
  132. system.  The Series 300 and Series 400 workstations can act
  133. as clients by using the Series 700 or Series 800 as servers.
  134. The maximum number of LUs for the gateway and link has been
  135. increased to 254 per system for both the stand alone and
  136. client/server configurations.

  138. SNAplus Release 2 adds SNA over Token Ring capability to the
  139. SNAplusLink product.  Now you can run both SNA and TCP/IP
  140. traffic over a single Token Ring link concurrently.  Since
  141. Token Ring is a LAN technology, this also increases
  142. performance compared to running SNA over SDLC lines.  The
  143. SDLC technology could run at a maximum of 64Kbps.  Token
  144. Ring can run at both 4 and 16Mbps.

  146. SNAplusLink has also been enhanced with SNA over X.25.  This
  147. allows SNA traffic to be sent over an X.25 network via a
  148. native solution.  Both SNA and TCP/IP traffic can be sent
  149. over the X.25 network concurrently.  QLLC technology is used
  150. to accomplish the SNA over X.25.  This solution is excellent
  151. for customers wishing to move toward standards based
  152. networking and off their proprietary SNA backbones.

  155. HP-UX SNAplus3270 for HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700, and 800
  156.  
  157. HP-UX SNAplus3270 Release 1 offers a high function 3270
  158. emulator with the following features:
  159.  
  160.      o  Support for multiple concurrent sessions
  161.      o  IBM 3278/3279 display emulation supports screen
  162.         models 2, 3, 4 and 5, color remapping, keyboard
  163.         remapping, multiple sessions, status line messages
  164.         and local copy capabilities
  165.      o  IBM 3287 printer emulation to printer or file (LU1
  166.         and LU3)
  167.      o  IND$FILE provides file transfer to MVS/TSO, VM/CMS
  168.         and CICS
  169.      o  HLLAPI, a programming tool to automate tasks that
  170.         require a series of actions
  171.      o  Response Time Monitor to evaluate host
  172.         responsiveness
  173.      o  NetView 3270 User Alerts to provide a communications
  174.         path between the 3270 user and the NetView operator
  175.         who can provide assistance from the host end

  177. SNAplus Release 2 adds support for 7 colors and a Motif
  178. interface to SNAplus3270.

  181. HP-UX SNAplusAPI for HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700, and 800
  182.  
  183. HP-UX SNAplusAPI Release 1 is a high function SNA PU Type
  184. 2.0 or PU Type 2.1 node, allowing multiple concurrent access
  185. to SNA host systems and SNA peer systems.  HP-UX SNAplusAPI
  186. allows application programs distributed across a network to
  187. work together to accomplish a single processing task such a
  188. querying a remote data base, copying a remote file, and
  189. sending or receiving electronic mail.  HP-UX SNAplusAPI
  190. supports LU6.2 for basic and mapped conversations.

  192. SNAplus Release 2 enhances SNAplusAPI with additional APIs.
  193. NetView API has been added which consists of programming
  194. calls to help customers integrate their applications with
  195. NetView.  NetView calls, and alerts can be initiated from
  196. within applications for built in network management.

  198. SNAplusAPI also includes LUA API.  This is a collection of
  199. APIs made up of Logical Units 0, 1, 2, and 3.  LUA API makes
  200. it possible for customers to gain access to printer and
  201. terminal data streams.  LU 0 calls offer customers the
  202. ability to "roll your own" protocol, allowing lower level,
  203. more intricate programming access for specialized
  204. applications.

  206. HP-UX SNAplusRJE for HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700 and 800
  207.  
  208. Release 2 of SNAplus offers a new product, SNAplusRJE.  This
  209. product offers batch communications to an IBM host
  210. mainframe.  SNAplusRJE emulates an IBM 3770 terminal.

  212. HP-UX SNAplus3179G for HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700 and 800
  213.  
  214. SNAplus3179G is another new product offered at Release 2
  215. under the SNAplus umbrella.  This product emulates an IBM
  216. 3179G/3192G color graphics display station.  Like
  217. SNAplus3270, it offers support for 7 colors and the Motif
  218. Graphical User Interface.

  221. Configuration and Management
  222.  
  223. HP-UX SNAplus provides the following features for
  224. configuring and managing the network to facilitate decision
  225. support:

  227.      o  Common User Access (a major element of SAA)
  228.         compliant Configuration, Manage and Browse programs
  229.      o  Help screens for each menu option
  230.      o  One integrated configuration program for all
  231.         services of HP-UX SNAplus
  232.      o  Load balancing and fault-tolerant configurations
  233.         among multiple servers
  234.      o  Browse program lets you view or print information
  235.         from log or trace files
  236.      o  Communications with IBM's NetView through data-link
  237.         alerts, response-time alerts, 3270 user alerts, and
  238.         user application alerts
  239.      o  NetView monitoring system gathers data for
  240.         administrative tasks such as operations management,
  241.         problem determination and performance management

  244. Migration
  245.  
  246. HP customers who have purchased existing HP-UX SNA products
  247. and have support contracts with HP, will receive an upgrade
  248. to the comparable HP-UX SNAplus products at no cost.    HP-
  249. UX SNAplus3270 users will have the same look and feel of the
  250. existing products but with additional functionality.  HP-UX
  251. SNAplusAPI users will have the same functionality, a
  252. slightly different implementation, but additional
  253. flexibility for communicating with other applications.
